What is internal medicine?

Internal medicine is the discipline within medicine that focuses on the overall health and wellness of adults and is primarily tasked with diagnosing, treating, and preventing chronic diseases. These diseases can vary in duration and complexity, from the “common cold” to more complex ailments such as diabetes, heart disease, or cancer. A physician specializing in internal medicine is known as an internist. Internists have general expertise in every organ or organ system and are equipped to handle pretty much any complaint or problem you may have. Once a disease is diagnosed, it is not uncommon for the internist to seek the input of other specialists who can provide more in-depth specialized care or perform certain procedures that an ailment requires—such as a referral to a cardiologist for a heart problem, a general surgeon for a hernia, or a psychiatrist for therapy for anxiety or depression.

What is the value of having an internist?

Internal medicine is complex. Often times one symptom may be linked to one or more organs or other body systems. Management of one disease may affect how another system functions. For patients with several medical problems who see multiple specialists, it often falls on the internist to manage a patient’s overall care to make sure everyone is on the same page and working towards the same goal(s). In order to do this well, it is very important for me to have a thorough understanding of your lifestyle, family history, and health goals so that I can work with you to keep you well and living a healthy life.
